The term diversity also stands for variety. It includes every aspect in which people may differ from each other, whether it is obvious differences in origin, gender or age or less noticeable differences such as educational background, religion or lifestyle.

Diversity Management meaning sensible use of social variety within a company or organisation is supposed to prevent minority discrimination and to promote equal opportunities. Equal opportunities should start by taking into account specific circumstances and environments. Also of great importance is the evaluation of every employee without regard to their gender, nationality, religion, sexual orientation, or which social group they belong to.

The basic idea is that variously comprised groups show a higher capability in solving problems. Thus, diversity management focuses on solutions for topics such as excess of age, reintegration of older employees, generation diversity or gender mainstreaming.

Many foundations and organisations provide benefits for specific groups and minorities and thus contribute to the idea of diversity.
