Doctoral Studies

The doctorate is the first scientific qualification to be gained for science as a profession as the German scholar Max Weber said.

Essential parts of the doctorate are the doctoral thesis (dissertation) and an oral examination. Whether the oral exam is a doctoral viva (Rigorosum) or a disputation depends on the regulation for the doctoral degree, but can sometimes be chosen by the students themselves.

The disputation is a debate, in which the student has to defend and prove his doctoral thesis, whereas the doctoral viva is a strict exam, in which the student has to answer not only questions on their thesis, but on the whole subject.

Doctoral studies are completed by the publication of the doctoral thesis. Students studying for a doctorate cannot bear the title of a doctor until they have received their doctoral certificates. More information on the different possibilities concerning doctoral studies can be found here.
