Scholarships

A grant is the most common form of funding individuals. In all the various forms of grants, the focus is on providing financial support to enable junior academics to concentrate on their research and developing their careers.

Grants awarded by foundations are divided into measures providing financial support and those providing support for developing ideas. Whilst the recipient of financial support receives a fixed monthly contribution for a set period of time, those receiving grants to provide support in developing ideas are provided with support to join networks or to take part in training events dealing with the topic of careers and the academic sector. The level of the grant awarded depends on the group of eligible recipients. Grants for the purposes of studying are usually awarded after taking into account the income of the parental household; however anyone not receiving financial support may still often qualify to receive support for developing ideas (see assistance to particularly gifted students).

Further forms of grants are structured programmes (see structured doctorates) as well as grants for those returning to undertake programmes of study and research grants. Grants for those returning to study are aimed at facilitating the reintegration into Germany of junior researchers who have been abroad and are also equally available for the completion of an internationally-based research project. Grants for those returning to study are limited to a set period and are terminated as soon as the recipient has entered into an employment relationship.

The awarding of grants is intended to enable and facilitate junior academics undertaking a career in the academic sector. This is why academic accomplishments and age are key factors in determining how grants are awarded. Most foundations also place considerable value on applicants demonstrating a commitment towards social engagement.
