Professorships for Engineers
Precondition for engineers to gain a professorship is a successfully finished doctorate followed by either a habilitation or several years of working experience which are equivalent to the achievements of a habilitation.
Those who are interested have to apply at universities or universities of applied sciences on their own initiative. In most of the cases, an application for a professorship requires 5 years of working experience, of which 3 years should be done at a non-university institution. Possible business branches are the industry or industry-oriented research institutions.
In some cases it is of importance that the applicant gained working experience in a responsible position and can show achievements in the industry, possibly in an executive position. Importance is also attached to additional qualifications and specialised knowledge in the field of practice-oriented research. Furthermore, pedagogic and didactic competences are an advantage for achieving a professorship.
